TRIAL DESCRIPTION
Public title Theory-Based Immunisation Health Education Intervention in Improving Child Immunisation Uptake Among Antenatal Mothers Attending Federal Medical Centre in Nigeria: A Study Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial
Official scientific title Theory-Based Immunisation Health Education Intervention in Improving Child Immunisation Uptake Among Antenatal Mothers Attending Federal Medical Centre in Nigeria: A Study Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial
Brief summary describing the background and objectives of the trial Vaccine Preventable Diseases are still the most common cause of childhood mortality with an estimated of approximately 3 million death every year mainly in Africa and Asia and about 29% of deaths among children aged 1–59 months were as a result of vaccine preventable. Despite the benefit of childhood immunization uptake, routine vaccination coverage for all recommended Expand Program on Immunization vaccines has remained poor in Nigeria (31%) with Zamfara state been among the state with poorest coverage (<10%). Despite this, no study has been conducted guided by any health theory in improving the knowledge, attitude, outcome expectations and self-efficacy of antenatal mothers towards childhood immunization which may increase childhood immunization uptake and finally decrease childhood mortality and morbidity. The general objective of this study is to develop, implement and evaluate the effects of an immunization health educational intervention with application of Social Cognitive Theory on pregnant women to improve childhood immunization uptake among children in Federal Medical Center Gusau, Zamfara State Nigeria.

INTERVENTIONS
Intervention type Intervention name Dose Duration Intervention description Group size Nature of control
Experimental Group Immunization health education intervention Childhood immunization uptake for pentavalent vaccine1, pentavalent vaccine2 and pentavalent vaccine3. Minimum of three months and maximum of six months. The immunization health education intervention will be based on social cognitive theory using knowledge, attitude, outcome expectation and self-efficacy constructs. 196
Control Group Usual care Childhood immunization uptake for pentavalent vaccine1, pentavalent vaccine2 and pentavalent vaccine3 Minimum of three months and maximum of six months. The participants in the control group will recieve the usual care (standard care) given to pregnant women at the federal medical center Gusau Zamfara state Nigeria. 196 Placebo
