TRIAL DESCRIPTION
Public title MAMI-RCT Study
Official scientific title Randomized Controlled Trial to Compare the Effect of Corn-Soy Blend + Vegetable Oil and Fish Oil (CSB-VO-FO) With Corn-Soy Blend + Vegetable Oil Alone (CSB-VO) on the Immunological and Microbiota Patterns among Children Aged 9 to 24 months with Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM)
Brief summary describing the background and objectives of the trial Corn-Soy Blend is fortified blended flour commonly used in treating Moderately Acute Malnutrition. It has high Omega-6 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFAs), but negligible long chain Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids. Dietary Omega-6 promote a pro-inflammatory intestinal Microbiota and systemic inflammation, while, dietary long chain Omega-3 PUFAs are anti-inflammatory and effective in treating some inflammatory disorders. We propose that the systemic inflammation found in children with Moderately Acute Malnutrition (MAM) can be more effectively reversed through supplementary feeding that includes oil enriched in anti-inflammatory long chain Omega-3 PUFAs rather than in pro-inflammatory Omega-6 PUFAs.

STUDY DESIGN
Intervention assignment Allocation to intervention If randomised, describe how the allocation sequence was generated Describe how the allocation sequence/code was concealed from the person allocating the participants to the intervention arms Masking If masking / blinding was used
Parallel: different groups receive different interventions at same time during study Randomised Simple randomization using a randomization table created by a computer software program Allocation was determined by the holder of the sequence who is situated off site Masking/blinding used Care giver/Provider,Outcome Assessors,Participants
