TRIAL DESCRIPTION
Public title Incentivised Testing for Adolescents (ITA)
Official scientific title Trial of an incentivisation strategy to improve uptake of HIV testing in adolescents
Brief summary describing the background and objectives of the trial HIV testing rates in adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa lack behind the rates in adults. Failure to receive testing may have a profound impact on health through delayed diagnosis and treatment. Few studies have investigated new and innovative testing strategies outside conventional healthcare facilities targeting this age group. This trial aims to investigate the role of incentives and price draws on test uptake in children and adolescents aged 8-17. The trial is nested in a population based HIV prevalence survey conducted in this age group. All children and adolescents participating in the anonymous HIV prevalence survey are referred to a primary health care clinic for HIV testing. The trial investigated the impact of a fixed monetary incentive (U$ 2), a price draw or no incentive on test uptake at the primary health clinics.

STUDY DESIGN
Intervention assignment Allocation to intervention If randomised, describe how the allocation sequence was generated Describe how the allocation sequence/code was concealed from the person allocating the participants to the intervention arms Masking If masking / blinding was used
Parallel: different groups receive different interventions at same time during study Randomised An independent statistician generated the randomization schedule using STATA 13. The unit of randomisation was the household. Allocation was determined by the holder of the sequence who is situated off site. An allocation list was given to each Research Assistant Open-label(Masking Not Used)
