TRIAL DESCRIPTION
Public title Feasibility and effectiveness of peer assessment in improving formative feedback among higher diploma students at the Kenya Medical Training College: A cluster randomized control trial
Official scientific title Feasibility and effectiveness of peer assessment in improving formative feedback among higher diploma students at the Kenya Medical Training College: A cluster randomized control trial
Brief summary describing the background and objectives of the trial Peer assessment is an innovative student-centered assessment strategy that encourages deep learning and enhances the development of higher order skills. Although peer assessment has been widely used in medical education, its adoption in the African education setup is low. This study aims at evaluating the feasibility and effectiveness of peer assessment for formative purposes as compared to teacher-led assessment. The specific objectives for the study are: How does time-to-feedback in formative assessment differ between higher diploma peer assessors and lecturers in Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), how does the quality of formative feedback given by higher diploma peer assessors compare to that given by lecturers in KMTC, How feasible is the implementation of peer assessment among higher diploma students in KMTC, what is the perception of students on feedback that is given through peer assessment for higher diploma students in KMTC, what are the lecturer’s perspectives on the quality of feedback given through peer assessment for higher diploma students at KMTC.

STUDY DESIGN
Intervention assignment Allocation to intervention If randomised, describe how the allocation sequence was generated Describe how the allocation sequence/code was concealed from the person allocating the participants to the intervention arms Masking If masking / blinding was used
Factorial: participants randomly allocated to either no, one, some or all interventions simultaneously Randomised Simple randomization using a randomization table created by a computer software program Allocation was determined by the holder of the sequence who is situated off site Masking/blinding used Participants
INTERVENTIONS
Intervention type Intervention name Dose Duration Intervention description Group size Nature of control
Experimental Group Peer assessment The intervention arm will be trained on how to conduct a peer assessment exercise. The students will be required to prepare a research concept paper on a topic of their choosing but within their professional area. Thereafter, they will be required to grade three assignments from their peers and provide feedback. 2 months The intervention arm will be trained on how to conduct peer assessment using a grading rubric. They will also learn the importance of peer assessment and how to conduct fair grading and give positive feedback. They will then be required to grade three assignments from their peers and provide feedback within three days. Also, each student in this arm will have their assessment graded by three peer assessors who will also provide written feedback. 351
Control Group teacher led assessment Students will be required to complete an assignment which entails developing a concept paper in their area of choosing within their profession. Thereafter the assignment will be graded by a lecturer who will also provide feedback. This is the normal method of student assessment in the institution. 2 months Assignments completed by students in this group will be reviewed and graded by lecturers. The teachers will also provide feedback. 351 Active-Treatment of Control Group

OUTCOMES
Type of outcome Outcome Timepoint(s) at which outcome measured
Primary Outcome The primary outcome will be the time taken by peer assessors to grade assignments and provide formative feedback. This will be compared with the time taken by lecturers to assess similar assignments and provide feedback. 1 month
Secondary Outcome The quality of feedback from peer assessors and lecturers. This will be determined using a standardized tool 1 month
Secondary Outcome student performance in formative assessment 1 month
Secondary Outcome Student performance in summative assessment 2 months
Secondary Outcome Feasibility of peer assessment at an institutional level 2 months
