TRIAL DESCRIPTION
Public title Teaching Cochrane trial
Official scientific title Effectiveness of teaching medical students on Cochrane activities: a randomized controlled trial
Brief summary describing the background and objectives of the trial The medical school has a key role in training medical professionals to the highest internationally accepted standards in quality research activities. In keeping with these standards its teaching staff recognizes the significance of ensuring that its students are furnished with the knowledge and skills of Cochrane activities which will ultimately help them in evidence-based clinical decision making. This is the first such study evaluating whether teaching medical students on Cochrane activities improves the knowledge and competence of medical students to Cochrane activities compared to conventional teaching. Objectives: To assess whether teaching medical students on Cochrane activities improves the knowledge and competence of medical students to Cochrane activities compared to conventional teaching.

STUDY DESIGN
Intervention assignment Allocation to intervention If randomised, describe how the allocation sequence was generated Describe how the allocation sequence/code was concealed from the person allocating the participants to the intervention arms Masking If masking / blinding was used
Randomised Stratified allocation where factors such as previous treatment are used in the stratification Allocation was determined by the holder of the sequence who is situated off site Masking/blinding used Outcome Assessors
INTERVENTIONS
Intervention type Intervention name Dose Duration Intervention description Group size Nature of control
Experimental Group Teaching Cochrane activities once 2 hours We randomly allocated the students to receive Cochrane activities lecture or non cochrane teaching 50
Control Group Conventional Obstetrics and Gynecology lecture group once 2 hours We randomly allocated the students to receive conventional Obstetrics and Gynecology lecture. The teaching sessions lasted approximately two hours. The domains were measured by an assessor who was blinded to the allocated teaching interventions. Analysis was by intention-to treat. Baseline characteristics of the students enrolled in the two groups were compare 150
