TRIAL DESCRIPTION
Public title Gait and obesity in autistic children
Official scientific title The Efficacy of Treadmill Walking Program on gait and Body mass index of children with Autism spectrum disorder
Brief summary describing the background and objectives of the trial Autism is a developmental disorder which presents before three years of age . It is a spectrum of pervasive developmental disorders and is found across all ethnic cultures and economic groups. Children with ASD have been found to demonstrate numerous gait stereotypies such as pacing, jumping, hopping, skipping, and spinning. Children with ASD tend to augment their walking stability with a reduced stride length, increased step width and therefore wider base of support, and increased time in the stance phase. Children with ASD have reduced range of motion at the ankle and knee during gait, with increased hip flexion. While exercise studies have been performed with youth diagnosed with severe developmental disabilities including autism, the main interest was the reduction of maladaptive behaviors and not specifically the ability to increase exercise capacity or the reduction of body weight. The overall findings of the studies conducted in these areas are inconclusive.

STUDY DESIGN
Intervention assignment Allocation to intervention If randomised, describe how the allocation sequence was generated Describe how the allocation sequence/code was concealed from the person allocating the participants to the intervention arms Masking If masking / blinding was used
Factorial: participants randomly allocated to either no, one, some or all interventions simultaneously Randomised Simple randomization using by using procedures such as coin-tossing or dice-rolling Sealed opaque envelopes Masking/blinding used Outcome Assessors
