TRIAL DESCRIPTION
Public title The Effect of Acupuncture on the Management of Postoperative pain control in total knee arthroplasty.
Official scientific title The Effect of Acupuncture on the Management of Postoperative pain control in total knee arthroplasty.
Brief summary describing the background and objectives of the trial Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a painful procedure. Even with patient-controlled intravenous opioids and nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs, pain can persist, especially during mobilization. Recently Electroacupuncture (EA) has been used to relieve postoperative pain after TKA with positive results (Tzeng CY, Acupuncture in medicine, 2015). The aim of the study is to compare in a prospective randomized double-blinded trial the EA + adductor canal block (ACB) to ACB alone over analgesic requirement in TKA.

STUDY DESIGN
Intervention assignment Allocation to intervention If randomised, describe how the allocation sequence was generated Describe how the allocation sequence/code was concealed from the person allocating the participants to the intervention arms Masking If masking / blinding was used
Parallel: different groups receive different interventions at same time during study Randomised simple randomisation using a randomisation table created by a computer software program Sealed opaque envelopes Masking/blinding used Outcome Assessors,Participants
INTERVENTIONS
Intervention type Intervention name Dose Duration Intervention description Group size Nature of control
Experimental Group Electroacupuncture with continuous adductor canal block. 2 sessions of acupuncture with 9 acupoints during 30 minutes each session and 0.2 % ropivacaïne administered continuously into the adductor canal catheter. 2 days. At each session, nine needles will be inserted for each patient (SI4 and LI 11 in the upper limbs, E34, E36, GB34, SP 6 and LV3 contralateral to the operative leg.) 44
Control Group Sham acupuncture with continuous adductor canal block. 2 sessions of sham acupuncture with 9 needles during 30 minutes each session and 0.2 % ropivacaïne administered continuously into the adductor canal catheter. 2 days. 9 needles will be inserted in non-specific acupoints during 30 minutes. 44 Placebo
