TRIAL DESCRIPTION
Public title COMPARATIVE EFFECTS OF ADJUNCTIVE PROBIOTICS VERSUS ANTIBIOTICS ON THE EFFICACY OF SUBGINGIVAL SCALING AND ROOT PLANING AMONG ADULTS WITH LOCALIZED PERIODONTITIS IN LAGOS STATE UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL
Official scientific title COMPARATIVE EFFECTS OF ADJUNCTIVE PROBIOTICS VERSUS ANTIBIOTICS ON THE EFFICACY OF SUBGINGIVAL SCALING AND ROOT PLANING AMONG ADULTS WITH LOCALIZED PERIODONTITIS IN LAGOS STATE UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL
Brief summary describing the background and objectives of the trial Periodontitis is multifactorial in etiology, involving an interplay between microbial, environmental and host factors. The pathogenic microorganisms responsible for periodontitis are usually anaerobes which are highly susceptible to antibiotic therapy. The current treatment approaches to periodontitis, which include subgingival scaling and root planing, are aimed at reducing the pathogenic microorganisms. The administration of favourable bacteria called probiotics has emerged as a promising concept in the prevention and treatment of periodontitis. The objectives are: To determine the effect of probiotics as adjunct to subgingival scaling and root planing To determine the effect of antibiotics as adjunct to subgingival scaling and root planing To compare the effect of probiotics as adjunct to subgingival scaling and root planing with that of subgingival scaling and root planing alone To compare the effect of antibiotics as adjunct to subgingival scaling and root planing with that of subgingival scaling and root planing alone

STUDY DESIGN
Intervention assignment Allocation to intervention If randomised, describe how the allocation sequence was generated Describe how the allocation sequence/code was concealed from the person allocating the participants to the intervention arms Masking If masking / blinding was used
Parallel: different groups receive different interventions at same time during study Randomised Simple randomization using by using procedures such as coin-tossing or dice-rolling Allocation was determined by the holder of the sequence who is situated off site Masking/blinding used Care giver/Provider,Outcome Assessors,Participants
INTERVENTIONS
Intervention type Intervention name Dose Duration Intervention description Group size Nature of control
Control Group Subgingival scaling and root planing plus hot saline mouthbath One visit subgingival scaling and root planing plus 6 times daily use of hot saline mouthbath 14 days Subgingival scaling and root planing will be done with sterilized curettes and normal saline on a dental chair 18 Active-Treatment of Control Group
Experimental Group Subgingival scaling and root planing plus Probiotics One visit subgingival scaling and root planing plus twice daily use of probiotic lozenges 14 days Subgingival scaling and root planing will be done with sterilized curettes on a dental chair immediately after which probiotics will be administered 18
Experimental Group Subgingival scaling and root planing plus Antibiotics One visit subgingival scaling and root planing plus antibiotics twice daily and hot saline mouth bath 6 times daily 14 days Subgingival scaling and root planing will be done using sterilized curettes immediately after which antibiotics will be used orally 18
