TRIAL DESCRIPTION
Public title The effect of zinc supplementation on semen parameters, serum and seminal zinc levels of oligozoospermic men attending University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH): A randomized double - blind trial.
Official scientific title The effect of zinc supplementation on semen parameters, serum and seminal zinc levels of oligozoospermic men attending University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH): A randomized double - blind trial.
Brief summary describing the background and objectives of the trial Zinc plays an important role in testicular development, spermatogenesis, sperm quality and sperm motility. Several studies on adult males with zinc deficiency showed that synthesis of testosterone and spermatogenesis may be as a result of adequate dietary supplementation of zinc. There are conflicting reports about the role of zinc supplementation in the improvement of sperm quality. While some studies demonstrated improved semen quality, others showed it is ineffective. Furthermore, available evidence is also inconclusive regarding the effect of zinc supplementation on seminal and serum zinc levels. General Objectives To determine the effect of zinc supplementation on semen parameters, serum zinc level and seminal zinc level of men with oligozoospermia. Specific objectives To review literature on zinc levels, semen parameters and male sub-fertility. To determine the baseline serum and seminal zinc levels among oligozoopermic men. To determine the baseline other semen parameters of oligozoospermic men. To compare seminal and serum zinc levels of oligozoospermic men on zinc supplements with those receiving placebo. To compare the post treatment semen parameters, among oligozoospermic men on zinc supplementation with those receiving placebo. To make recommendations based on findings from objectives 2, 3, 4 and 5.

STUDY DESIGN
Intervention assignment Allocation to intervention If randomised, describe how the allocation sequence was generated Describe how the allocation sequence/code was concealed from the person allocating the participants to the intervention arms Masking If masking / blinding was used
Parallel: different groups receive different interventions at same time during study Randomised Simple randomization using a randomization table created by a computer software program Allocation was determined by the holder of the sequence who is situated off site Masking/blinding used Care giver/Provider,Participants
INTERVENTIONS
Intervention type Intervention name Dose Duration Intervention description Group size Nature of control
Experimental Group Zinc Sulfate 25mg of elemental zinc Three(3)months Each participant in the Intervention group will take 25mg of elemental zinc daily over three months 41
Control Group Inactive drug Daily Three (3) months Placebo which is an inactive drug containing maize starch will be taken daily for three months 41 Placebo
