TRIAL DESCRIPTION
Public title Collaborative Newborn Support Project
Official scientific title Improving Quality of Newborn Care in Bungoma County
Brief summary describing the background and objectives of the trial The Collaborative New-born Support Project will be implemented in Bungoma County from October 2015 to December 2018. It will tackle the challenge of neonatal deaths in Bungoma County that is among the highest in Kenya. Lack of critical infrastructure and skilled personnel and an incoherent community referral system for neonatal problems are key challenges facing the county health system. The goal of the project is reduced neonatal mortality ratio by 30% between October 2015 and April 2017 in Bungoma County. This will be achieved through setting up 7 special new-born care units in the sub county hospitals, strengthening 2 existing special care units, training and mentoring 36 health workers to be able to manage new-born health problems, providing best practice guidelines, developing a tele-health platform to enable the rural new-born carers consult paediatricians in making decisions and establishing a mobile phone based follow up system for neonates born within and without the health care system to enable mothers make timely health seeking decisions. Additionally, communities will be sensitized on availability and importance of seeking new-born care services in the new units. The project will mainstream neonatal care in a county with an unacceptably high neonatal mortality.
