TRIAL DESCRIPTION
Public title Exercise and Insulin Resistance
Official scientific title Superior Effects of Short-Term High versus Moderate Intensity Training on Insulin Resistance in Overweight and Obese Adults: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Brief summary describing the background and objectives of the trial Exercise effects on insulin resistance are dependent on the intensity and duration of the intervention. In chronic training studies, improvements in insulin resistance are amplified by decreases in body fat and/or increases of cardiorespiratory fitness. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of short-term high intensity interval training (HIIT) and continuous moderate intensity training (CMIT) on insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) in physically inactive overweight/obese adults.

STUDY DESIGN
Intervention assignment Allocation to intervention If randomised, describe how the allocation sequence was generated Describe how the allocation sequence/code was concealed from the person allocating the participants to the intervention arms Masking If masking / blinding was used
Parallel: different groups receive different interventions at same time during study Randomised A pseudo-random number generator software (Research Randomizer version 4.0) Allocation was assigned based on computer generated numbers Open-label(Masking Not Used)
INTERVENTIONS
Intervention type Intervention name Dose Duration Intervention description Group size Nature of control
Experimental Group High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) 18-24 minutes per day 10 consecutive days Participants performed a total of 18-24 minutes (including warm up and cool down for 3 minutes) cycling on an electronically-braked cycle ergometer (Lode Excalibur Sport, Groningen, The Netherlands) for 10 consecutive days, with at least 24 hours in-between sessions. Participants were required to maintain a workload that corresponded with a wattage that solicited 90-100% of pre-determined peak aer 31
Experimental Group Continuous Moderate Intensity Training (CMIT) 18-24 minutes per day 10 consecutive days Participants performed a total of 18-24 minutes (including warm up and cool down for 3 minutes) cycling on an electronically-braked cycle ergometer (Lode Excalibur Sport, Groningen, The Netherlands) for 10 consecutive days, with at least 24 hours in-between sessions. Participants were required to maintain a workload that corresponded with a wattage that solicited 60-70% of pre-determined peak aero 33
Control Group Control (CNT) 10 consecutive days The CNT underwent pre and post intervention assessments without taking part in the exercise intervention. 31 Uncontrolled
