TRIAL DESCRIPTION
Public title Sannut Study
Official scientific title Evaluating the effectiveness of integrated sanitation and nutrition programs: Evidence from an RCT in Kitui, Kenya
Brief summary describing the background and objectives of the trial Child stunting is a persistent problem in many of Kenya¿s rural counties. Kitui County has one of the highest stunting rate in the nation, with 45% of the population exhibiting elements of stunting against the national prevalence of 26%. Factors related to poor sanitation and hygiene practices among caregivers of children exposed to fecal contamination through their environs, and poor nutrition practices put children at risk for stunting. Despite their shared objectives, sanitation and nutrition programs are often implemented separately. The SanNut study explored whether an integrated sanitation and nutrition program piloted in Kitui County would lead to better sanitation and nutrition behaviours and practices among caregivers of young children compared to a standard sanitation program.

STUDY DESIGN
Intervention assignment Allocation to intervention If randomised, describe how the allocation sequence was generated Describe how the allocation sequence/code was concealed from the person allocating the participants to the intervention arms Masking If masking / blinding was used
Parallel: different groups receive different interventions at same time during study Randomised Randomization done using Stata software Randomization done using software without any human intervention. Masking/blinding used Outcome Assessors
INTERVENTIONS
Intervention type Intervention name Dose Duration Intervention description Group size Nature of control
Experimental Group Sannut program (CLTS Plus) Once 2 months The intervention was an add-on to standard CLTS programming consisting of two community meetings for caregivers with children under 5, plus additional messaging for community health workers when they do routine household visits. The messaging was about household sanitation conditions, toddler nutritional practices, and child health outcomes. 2279
Control Group Standard Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) Once 2 months Communities were incentivized to stop openly defecating through shaming and disgust upon realization that they were ingesting each others feces. This happened in a community meeting where open defecation in the community was mapped and the associated diseases was discussed. 2157 Active-Treatment of Control Group
