TRIAL DESCRIPTION
Public title Positive deviance approach for exclusive breast feeding practice
Official scientific title Community based Newborn and Infant Breast Feeding Practice Using Positive Deviance Approach: Non-Randomized Controlled Trial OR Effect of Using Positive Deviance Approach on exclusive breast feeding practice in Jimma Town: Community based controlled trial
Brief summary describing the background and objectives of the trial The World Health Organization guidelines for essential newborn and infant care encompass initiation of breast feeding, and exclusive breast feeding. Breast milk provides all infants nutritional and fluid needs in the first six months and is a perfect combination of proteins, fats, carbohydrates and fluids and it is the best and cost effective intervention to reduce infant morbidities and mortalities. Therefore, optimal breastfeeding is recommended; i.e. Exclusively breastfed for the first six months and continuation of breastfeeding up 24 months or beyond. Positive deviance (PD) is an approach to behavioral and social change based on the observation that in any community there are people whose uncommon but successful behaviors or strategies enable them to find better solutions to a problem than their peers, despite facing similar challenges and having no extra resources than their peers. Now a days, low social interaction become a common phenomena which is more observable in urban residents that may affect experience sharing on breast feeding practice. Hence, the general objective of this study is to assess the effect of positive deviance approach on exclusive breast feeding practice at community level using positive deviants.
