Official scientific title Effectiveness of Structured Educational Program on Mothers’ Knowledge and Practices Regarding Care of their Infants with Congenital Hypothyroidism: A pre-Post Quasi-Experimental Study
Brief summary describing the background and objectives of the trial Abstract Background: Congenital hypothyroidism is a common neonatal endocrine disorder that may lead to serious developmental complications if not managed early. Improving maternal awareness and caregiving practices is considered an important public health strategy for enhancing endocrine health outcomes among affected infants. Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of an educational program on mothers’ knowledge and practices regarding the care of infants with congenital hypothyroidism. Methods: A quasi-experimental one-group pretest–post-test design was conducted on a purposive sample of 91 mothers of infants with congenital hypothyroidism attending primary health centers in Bahariya Oasis City, Giza Governorate. The mothers received an educational program consisting of eight group sessions delivered twice weekly, focusing on improving mothers’ knowledge and reported practices related to infant care. Results: The findings showed a statistically significant improvement in mothers’ knowledge and practices after program implementation. Mothers with satisfactory knowledge increased from 33% before the program to 85.7% after the intervention. Similarly, adequate reported practices improved from 31.9% pre-program to 83.5% post-program. A significant positive correlation was found between mothers’ knowledge and practices regarding infant care. Conclusion: The educational program had a positive effect on improving mothers’ knowledge and practices regarding the care of infants with congenital hypothyroidism. Educational interventions may serve as an effective public health strategy for improving endocrine health outcomes and minimizing disease-related complications among affected infants. Implications to practice This study demonstrates that structured training program increase mothers' knowledge and practices regarding care of the infant with hypothyroidism. Integrating evidence-based and regular program into in-service training can strengthen infant protection practices by supporting early identification, appropriate reporting and effective intervention. Experimental Group Structured Educational Program This phase took two months from the beginning of May till the end of June 2025. The main objective of the training program was to enhance mothers` knowledge and practice regarding care of their Infants with congenital hypothyroidism. Teaching methods used were lectures, group discussion, brainstorming, real situations, role play, and participation in discussion. The media used were data presentation for PowerPoint presentations, illustrated Arabic brochure, pictures, posters, and videos about congenital hypothyroidism. The researchers conducted the program every Wednesday and Thursday between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Participants were split into seven small groups of 12 to 14 mothers each, with one group attending per day. Each group participated in eight sessions, with each session lasting between 30 and 60 minutes 91
