Official scientific title Preventing TB-related adverse outcomes in patients initiating ART: the impact of Xpert MTB/RIF
Brief summary describing the background and objectives of the trial In December 2010, WHO recommended Xpert MTB/RIF as the first line TB diagnostic in HIV-infected patients. The impact of Xpert MTB/RIF on TB outcomes in patients initiating antiretroviral therapy(ART) is unknown.

STUDY DESIGN
Intervention assignment Allocation to intervention If randomised, describe how the allocation sequence was generated Describe how the allocation sequence/code was concealed from the person allocating the participants to the intervention arms Masking If masking / blinding was used
Parallel: different groups receive different interventions at same time during study Randomised permuted block randomisation with blocks of size four. Allocation was done in the laboratory. The code was placed in sealed opaque envelopes kept by the data manager and given to the laboratory manager in batches. The code was exposed only after specimens were assigned sequential lab numbers. Masking/blinding used Outcome Assessors
INTERVENTIONS
Intervention type Intervention name Dose Duration Intervention description Group size Nature of control
Experimental Group Xpert MTB/RIF 220
Control Group Fluorescent microscopy 220
