TRIAL DESCRIPTION
Public title Ultrasound guided pectoral II block versus Thoracic paravertebral block for breast surgery
Official scientific title Ultrasound guided pectoral II block versus Thoracic paravertebral block for breast surgery
Brief summary describing the background and objectives of the trial Thoracic wall blocks (pectoral block i.e. infiltrating local anaesthetic (LA) between pectoralis major and minor muscles (PECS I), and and the modified pectoral block i.e. PECS II (including PECS I together with infiltrating local anaesthetic between pectoralis minor and serratus anterior muscle, and (Serratus plane block) are peripheral nerve block alternatives to paravertebral block for providing both surgical anesthesia and postoperative analgesia for breast surgery. All rely on LA placement between the thoracic wall muscles, where the sensory nerves supplying the breast run.

STUDY DESIGN
Intervention assignment Allocation to intervention If randomised, describe how the allocation sequence was generated Describe how the allocation sequence/code was concealed from the person allocating the participants to the intervention arms Masking If masking / blinding was used
Parallel: different groups receive different interventions at same time during study Randomised Simple randomisation using a randomisation table from a statistics book. Sealed opaque envelopes Masking/blinding used Participants

OUTCOMES
Type of outcome Outcome Timepoint(s) at which outcome measured
Primary Outcome evaluating the analgesic and clinical efficacy of pectoral II block measuring intraoperative heart rate, mean blood pressure on reaching the operating theatre and every 10 minutes till end of procedure. measuring visual analogue score postoperatively at 30 minutes, 1, 6 , 12, and 24 hours. measuring the first time to require analgesia. measuring the first 24 hour postoperative analgesic consumption, and recording complications
Secondary Outcome comparing the analgesic efficacy compared to the ultrasound guided paravertebral block measuring intraoperative heart rate, mean blood pressure on reaching the operating theatre and every 10 minutes till end of procedure. measuring visual analogue score postoperatively at 30 minutes, 1, 6 , 12, and 24 hours. measuring the first time to require analgesia. measuring the first 24 hour postoperative analgesic consumption, and recording complications.
