Brief summary describing the background and objectives of the trial Adolescents ages 12 – 17 have been identified by various studies as the most sleep deprived population across all lifespan. The presence of an underlying sleep problem in almost every psychiatric disorder makes it of high priority to tackle sleep problems especially insomnia in adolescents. The purpose of this study is to assess the prevalence and correlates of insomnia among in-school adolescents in Bayelsa State Nigeria and to determine the effectiveness of cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia on sleep problems and mental health outcomes.

Experimental Group Cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia A 45 - 60 minutes of group CBT-I one day a week 5 weeks The sleep intervention programme will consist of five sessions offered one day of each week for five weeks in the intervention schools. Each session will last 45-60 minutes. The mode of delivery will be through interactive lectures, role plays, video demonstrations and small group discussions. The first session will be a general introductory session. The participants will take turns introducing themselves to the group. This will be followed by setting ground rules and a discussion on the benefits of sleep. The second session will be spent exploring physiology of sleep. The objective of this session covers how sleep occurs, the roles of melatonin and adenosine, the impact of light on melatonin secretion, and the implication for sleep routine. The third session will focus on sleep hygiene education; the importance of building a lifestyle that fosters good sleep and how to have a routine sleep schedule. By the fourth session participants will be taught a relaxation technique. The focus will be on deep breathing exercises, muscle relaxation and creative imagery. The fifth session will be a revision of all the sessions and techniques taught in the course of the programme. It will also touch on relapse prevention and then a formal closing of the intervention. All sessions will begin with a recap of the topic learned the previous week. Participants will also be allowed to share their personal experiences and how they practiced their skills individually or collectively as a group. At the end of each session, there will also be a recap of what has been learnt. 25

1. Students between the ages thirteen to seventeen (13– 17) years; 2. Students whose parents provide consent and 3. Students who provide assent will be included in the study. 1. Students identified as having learning difficulties by their teachers. 2. Students who have been treated for a psychiatric disorder in the past as ascertained from the socio-demographic questionnaire. 3.
